Project 2: Channel Bumper

In this particular project, we were to use information for any proposed channel (*existing or fictional)
create a mood board that reflected their concept/idea style guide that conveyed the final look and feel
storyboard animatics explore appropriate audio to uplift the motion tempo.

Based on the example shown during the lecture class, I had some basic ideas of what I wanted to create. Below are some animations or ads that I found on YouTube and Pinterest.

Besides, I also searched for 3 brands that I would like to work on.

#1 AHA

Figure 1.1

AHA is Coca-Cola's first new major brand in 10 years. The brand launched with eight flavor mashups like Lime + Watermelon and Strawberry + Cucumber to provide novel sensory experiences. This differentiated AHA from traditional sparkling waters relying on single fruit essences. It also had sleek, colorful designs that pop on store shelves with vivid photography highlighting the fruit fusions.

#2 The Body Shop

Figure 1.2

The shop has a list of collections, for example, a range of body care such as body butter, body mist, hand cream, fragrance, and more. On its website, I saw a limited-edition body care products which brings a scent of fresh & hydrating. The essence of Yuzu is captured to provide a burst of energy and vitality to your body care routine while Bluebell captures the essence of this ethereal bloom to evoke feelings of serenity and tranquility.

#3 Simple Life

Figure 1.3

Simple life is a facial skincare brand. It is a PETA-certified cruelty-free skincare brand that is kind to skin, the planet and animals too.

Storyboard:

After getting the approval from sir, I got to pick the first or the second brand as two of them had quite a lot of elements and content to do. I decided to go for the first brand which was the AHA soda water.

Then I proceeded to the storyboard sketches. Before doing so, I searched Pinterest for many related videos or ads promoting drinks. Many of the themes are similar, such as introducing the drink's flavors, character interactions, etc. Although many use 3D or live-action footage, I could modify them slightly into graphics and illustrations.

I decided to use vector illustration to create my channel bumper because I was more familiar with doing illustrations. This animation would alternate between typography and illustration, with each scene being evenly balanced.

Figure 2.1

I drew a very short storyboard which was a person opening a can in the first scene, then the next scene was a short sentence introducing that this brand will come up with a new flavor. The scene changed to an illustration of two people cheering with the can, and again the next scene was with the word describing how the drink was. Followed by, a person was drinking the soda and the background would pop up with the fruits and some effects to express the feelings. Lastly was the brand name with little decorations around it.

Progression:

Figure 2.2

These were the images that I used for references while illustrating the scenes.

Figure 2.3

This is the color scheme for the channel bumper because the drink that I wanted to show was orange and grapefruit, which were yellow-orange and pink.

Figure 2.3

I finished my illustration in Illustrator, before importing it to After Effect, I needed to arrange the layers of each frame so I didn't get confused while animating it.

Figure 2.4

The first scene will open with the action of opening a soda can, as this can immediately let the audience know it's about a soda. I tried to find illustrations of this action but couldn't find one that matched my vision, so I used real images to illustrate it. For animating, I originally planned to use the puppet tool to bend the fingers to show the action of opening the can, but I couldn't pin the shape for some reason. So, I animated the action using position instead, although it still looks very stiff.

Figure 2.5

In this scene, the animation will highlight that there is a new soda flavor available. I'll use vibrant colors and dynamic text to catch the viewer's attention, making the announcement exciting and appealing.

Figure 2.6

This scene will feature characters raising their cans and cheering, emphasizing the social and enjoyable aspect of drinking the soda.

Figure 2.7

The word "Refreshing" will appear on the screen, animated to give a cool and invigorating feel.

Figure 2.8

Figure 2.9

For this scene, I intended to animate the character's hand bringing the can to her mouth, but I still haven't figured out why I can't use the puppet tool on my illustration. So, I used position and rotation to animate it. However, some parts look visually awkward, so I enlarged the character to obscure those areas. When the character brings the drink to her mouth, the background will show the drink's fruits and some illustrations to enrich the scene.

Figure 2.10

Since the brand's logo I found online wasn't particularly special, I referred to Pinterest for inspiration. After the name appears, there will be circles of varying sizes around it, representing soda bubbles.

Figure 2.11

All of these animations are set to be two seconds each, but I neglected the importance of background music. If I can't find music that matches the animation's rhythm, I will have to make adjustments. Fortunately, I was able to find suitable background music, and the style I chose is fast-paced and rhythmic.

Final Submission:

REFLECTION

This project was to create a channel bumper for a brand. The teacher kept emphasizing the project's requirements because some seniors had made mistakes in the past. When I first started thinking about the content, I was worried that the animation might be off-topic, but after discussing with sir, my idea was confirmed to be feasible.

During the animation production process, I enjoyed the fun of creating. However, I overlooked the importance of background music and did not choose the music before planning my animation. Luckily, I found a piece of music that fits the animation later; otherwise, I would have needed to readjust the timing of each scene. Additionally, I encountered an issue with the puppet tool not working on the illustration. Due to time constraints, I had to use basic operations with position and rotation, which resulted in a somewhat stiff outcome, but it still met the expected effect.

Through this project, although it was only a few seconds long, I learned a lot. I also gained a deeper understanding of the animation production process. These experiences have provided important considerations for my future projects to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
