Week 1
After the briefing of this module, we were required to create a Pinterest board where we could collect our inspiration for the assignments. Other than that, we also needed to list 3 favorite motion graphic animations and explain why we like it the most.
1. Plastic Bites
This is a motion graphic animation created using 3D by Sang Hee Choi. I believe it's a very interesting short film. The creator conveys a message to the audience in a creative way. It was about us eating microplastics every day due to plastic pollution, so he combined the food with plastic products together. Additionally, the smoothness of the animation and the transitions between scenes are seamless, and the use of colors is very eye-catching for viewers.
2. Pandora
Other than 3D, I'm particularly fond of motion graphics featuring illustrations. The vibrant color palette and lively character animations in this short film are incredibly captivating, drawing me in with a sense of joy and fun. Each frame is brimming with different graphic elements, and the transitions between scenes are smooth and diverse.
3. A motion graphic from collage
The animation is filled with various graphic elements presented in a collage format. Additionally, it combines illustration and 3D design, not only enriching the visual effects but also immersing the audience in a unique visual experience. Moreover, the layout of each scene is particularly distinctive and imaginative.
Week 2
During this particular week, our lecturer provided us some images to create different compositions using Photoshop. Then, from one of the compositions, we were required to choose one to animate in After Effects. The aim of doing this exercise was to let us get more familiar with the software.
Composition 1:
The inspiration for my first composition came from this reference which I saved earlier to my moodboard.
Figure 1.1
Although the image primarily features a door, I chose to use a television instead. I removed the middle screen of the TV and placed various photos such as a fencer, mountains, buildings, etc.
Figure 1.2
Around the TV, I placed several piles of grass to fill up the empty space.
Figure 1.3
Lastly, I adjusted the brightness, color tone, and exposure to make the image more vintage.
Composition 2:
For the second composition, my idea was inspired by this reference.
Figure 1.4
I roughly arranged several images as the background.
Figure 1.5
Then, I used the pen tool to draw a road extending from the mountainside, adding a moon.
Composition 3:
Figure 1.6
As for the third composition, since I lacked ideas, I randomly put different images together.
Animation:
Next is to animate one of the compositions, and I chose the first one because I had the reference as my guide.
Figure 1.7
First, I used the scale to gradually shrink the leaves and applied rotation to slowly make them move outside the screen.
Figure 1.8
Once the TV screen appears, it quickly zooms into the TV screen, focusing only on the background of the mountains.
Figure 1.9
Then, buildings and two fencers jump in, followed by some small movements.
Figure 1.10
Finally, I repeated the previous zoom-in keyframes but in reverse, zooming out. To avoid visual monotony, I also animated the leaves next to the TV to sway slightly.
