Task 2: Visual Design Publication
In this task, we were required to design the publication of the dissertation.
The concept of the publication must be relevant to the research topic.
Ideation:
I scrolled Pinterest to find some ideas to work on my cover page.

As my content was about anime, I sketched my cover design with a sky and
cartoonish font for the title. Another idea was like manga style, with very
squarish lines. But the idea was just a draft, I hadn’t tried it out in
Illustrator.
After the feedback was given, I was told that the title lacked hierarchy, as
it felt too boring. I also changed my design as well because the idea was not
very related to my content.

I tried to use back the squarish boxes for the cover design as the font that I
picked was also quite square. Made a little adjustment and added some images
into it, like a film roll, or anime girl.

I also started to work on the text as well, so to maintain consistency, I
still applied the squarish elements to my design.
During the next consultation, my lecturer said it didn’t show any visual
element that was related to Japanese since my topic was Japanese anime. She
suggested me to look at Japanese patterns like clouds, flowers, architecture,
waves, and many more to apply in my design.
So, I threw away all the work that I had done before and decided to start over
a new one.

During the consultation, my lecturer also provided me some ideas to create a
cover page by compelling different images to show that it was evolving and
placing the title in the middle.
I searched for the composition design but changed the images of it. I
searched for some popular anime series that were from 2013 to 2023 that I
could apply to. I also picked a new font for the title.

I changed the color palette because the first color palette had too many
choices of color and I needed a more lighter color.

After the cover page, there was an empty page behind, so I decided to do a
design to fill the spaces.

These were the patterns that I did in Illustrator, just copied them and
pasted them in Indesign.
Figure 1.20 First Attempt
The content page that I did was an idea from a Japanese pulled door. I
tried different composition, arranging the patterns in many ways but I
wasn’t satisfied with it because different elements on one page was quite
messy to look at and it was also hard for me to think of other compositions
in the next section.

So, I decided to make it one pattern in one section, and each section had
a different color from the color palette like the reference above.
