Project 1: Instructable Poster

Week 3

We had been assigned to create an infographic poster for one recipe selected from Pasta Grannies.

We need to study one video, break it down, and chunk the preparation and cooking process into an instructable poster. The poster size would be 1240 x 1750 pixels or 2048 x 2048 pixels.

The video that I picked was about making Crostoli, as the steps are clear and easy which I thought would be easy for me to draw out.

After watching the video, I listed out the ingredients and steps that I needed to draw.

I searched for some references to work on my poster.

Week 4:

Figure 1.6 Layout and Background

I drew out all the ingredients, steps, and the final food. Arranged them in a simple layout and added a background. But the whole outcome was not very attractive and the food looked not very tempting to me. So, I decided to select another recipe and redo this poster again.

Week 6:

Since I had very limited time, I only chose some short recipes. The video I found was about making risotto-style fregola pasta with mussels.

For this new poster, I thought of using a vector illustration art style to present it, because besides doing the instructable poster, I still need to create an animation, which I think vector illustration will be more easier and suitable.

Figure 2.3 Ingredients and Tools

Based on the references that I found, I traced the fregola pasta, wine bottle, wine glass, mussels, etc using pen tool.

I decided to arrange the final dish at the bottom with wine because in the video they served the dish with white wine also. So, the remaining space will be the steps.

Figure 2.6 In Progress

To make the steps clearer to be seen, I decided to add a new background colour, and I thought of adding paper notes as background. The small note would be the list of ingredients, and the bigger note would be some steps and instructions.

Figure 2.7 Final Outcome

The font that I applied was Segoe Print. I combined a few last steps into the third step as I didn't have enough space to draw.

Project 1: Instructable Poster Animation

Week 7:

I decided to make a short opening in this animation, with the kitchen background and plant.

Figure 3.2 Second Attempt on the opening background

As the instructable poster consists of a red background, so I remained some space for red and other space for white background, which the text could be clearly seen. Since the video from pasta grannies took place at a restaurant, I added a signboard for the name of the restaurant, but I replaced it with the recipe name instead.

I decided to animate the plant flutter in the wind a little by adding keyframes at rotation. Besides, I also animated the signboard swinging.

The next part is introducing the ingredients that need to be prepared. I did an animation of the note flying from the right side as a transition to the next section. Then, I left some space on the right for showing the ingredients.

I completed the animation of the three steps and a final food scene. I also added background music for this video.

Reflection

Throughout all of the projects, I think this project was the most interesting because it's about food and I was very excited to get started. For the first attempt, I felt disappointed in myself for not doing a good illustration of the food, so the whole poster was not very attractive. But after I redo the whole poster, the poster was so much better than the previous one.

The hardest part of this project was how to summarize the steps and convert them into one diagram. Besides, I also struggled a lot while arranging the spaces to fit the graphics and illustrations in one poster. While doing the animation video, I sometimes got lost and confused by the keyframes. I also need a lot of passion while doing it because I need to try on different speeds and timelines so that the animation won't go too fast or slow.

But overall, I felt satisfied when I finished the animation after spending much time and putting much effort into it. I also get more familiar with After Effects from this project.
