INSTRUCTION

Final Project

In this project, we must present an artwork influenced by one visual design material with the theme 'Reduced Inequalities'. We are required to study the items of SDG 10 and choose a preferred target: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_Development_Goal_10

Week 11 & 12:

Figure 1.1 Visual Reference 14/11/2022

From SDG 10, I have chosen target 10.3, which is “Ensure equal opportunities and discrimination”. From the context that I read in Wikipedia, it mentions that women are more likely to be victims of discrimination than men, then I remember a phenomenon about women facing discrimination in the workplace, they didn’t get treated as same as men did.

So, I decided to find an artwork about gender inequality in the workplace. The artwork that I found on Google was posted by Human Resource Management; the artwork is about inequality in the workplace. The unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder, regardless of their qualifications or achievements.

According to the visual that I found, the design principles that occur are:

·Repetition: As there is a repeat of men at the upper part

·Symbol: The woman and the men wearing formal suits and ties symbolized that they are businessmen or businesswomen in the workplace.

·Contrast: The contrast of the colour of the upper and lower part, the upper part is all in blue sky colour, but the lower part presents it in a different colour with grey colour.

·Balance: The balance of the men at the upper part, the numbers of men standing left and right are the same but look different in size, so it’s an approximate symmetry.

·Movement: The woman is using her hand to support the glass and tries to push upwards.

·Emphasis: The woman is the emphasis, she is in the middle and the focus of the artwork. The woman's appearance shows and develops the theme of the artwork to the viewers.

From this artwork, I investigated that men are the barrier to women in their careers, in which they stand on the glass so that the woman cannot achieve success like men do. The men looked upwards to the sky and I think they are pretending they didn’t see the woman struggling underneath. The facial expressions of the men are like they don't really care about this problem. On the other hand, the woman’s facial expression is helpless, frustrated, and dissatisfied with this situation. Besides, the background of men is the sky which represents that they have better opportunities, while the woman underneath which her background in grey seems to represent underground that she doesn’t get the same opportunities or is being treated the same as men.

Final Submission:

Rationale:
Since my visual reference is about gender inequalities in the workplace, so I designed the woman in a smaller size which represents that she does not treat equally by men, and the men that are in enormous sizes ignore the woman's presence. I coloured the woman's suit with bright red showing that she still stays strong in the workplace and also made a contrast with the men.

Feedbacks

Week 11
The image of the visual reference must be posted.
Ms. Anis suggested I search on 'Glass Ceiling'.

Week 12
The illustration is good, can dress her in a fierce red which made contrasts with the cold colour scheme.

Reflection

In this project, I was worried because I was still doing the previous project and I only have a week time to do the analysis and investigation. I also found it a bit hard while finding a suitable image for visual reference at first because the range is too big, but luckily my lecturer provided me some suggestions. Besides, I am more familiar with every design principle while doing visual analysis.
