Project 3: Original Comic Pilot Story

Week 7

We were required to create a short story by using 3 Act Structure. So, I wanted to write a story about a nightmare that I had dreamed of before. This story only contains 2 characters, the protagonist who is a high school student called, Ellie, and a creepy monster.

3-Act Structure:

Act 1: Set up
Every day the students are studying and learning in class, including Ellie. When the school bell rings, they start packing their things and leaving school. As the students are leaving, the campus became quiet again.

Act 2: Conflict
One day, Ellie felt tired while listening in class and she fell asleep. When she woke up, the class already ended and there was nobody in the class. She packed her things and got ready to leave. While she was walking in the corridor, she barely saw a silhouette at the end of the corridor and realized it was moving towards her. She was terrified and began to run away from it.

Act 3: Resolution
When she thought she had escaped from it, she went to the restroom to take a breath. Suddenly, she heard some footsteps coming from the outside and it was getting closer and closer. She held her breath by not making a sound and hope it didn’t notice her. But it had the ability to sense people around and found that Ellie was hiding in there. In the end, Ellie was found and got eaten by it.

Week 9

Since my story is a horror theme, so I wanted to make my cover related to it by using a dark colour theme. I found some references on Pinterest before I worked on the cover page.

Figure 2.0 Reference from Pinterest

I wanted to design my cover similar to the image above because based on my story the protagonist was being chased by an unknown creature and in the end, the creature found her.

Sketches:

Figure 2.1 Sketches of facial expression

Figure 2.2 Protagonist of the story

At first, I tried to draw different styles of terrified face expressions. For the first one, I think it really brings out the feeling of being scared but it will be hard for me to draw during the next session as it was not my art style. For the second one, I try drawing a little chibi and it doesn't match the theme of my story. Lastly, I chose the third drawing for my cover because it matched the theme and I found it quite easy for me to draw compared to the first one.

Figure 2.4 Creepy hands sketch

According to the reference for my cover, I changed the hands to creepier-looking hands. I wanted to draw the hands that reached out from the dark and tried to catch the girl.

Week 10

After I did the sketch, I started colouring. Firstly, I began with the hands.

I created a new calligraphic brush, which is 1pt as the outline, and redrew the image as it was just a rough sketch and needed to be cleaner. Then, I used the eyedropper tool to take colour from the reference image and colored it.

Figure 3.3 Different Attempts

I wanted it to be like the creepy hands came out from nowhere, and reached out to catch something. So, the first and last attempts are relatable to my ideas, but I found the third one is more interested in a round shape compared to the first which is only horizontal.

Final Work:

Based on the feedback given, I made some changes to the title. I also added some shaded parts of the shirt.

Week 14

I was suggested to download some fonts that suit the word "SILENCE". The font that I found was " vtks kravadin".

Final Submission:

Figure 5.2 Final Book Cover

This is the story of a girl, Ellie who fell asleep during class. When she woke up, the class already ended, and nobody was there. While she was walking in the corridor, she barely saw a silhouette at the end of the corridor and realized it was moving towards her. She escaped from it and went to the restroom to take a breath. Suddenly, she heard some footsteps coming from the outside and it was getting closer and closer. She held her breath by not making a sound and hope it didn’t notice her. But in the end, Ellie was found and eaten by it.

Rationale:
The characters shown on the cover are the protagonist, a high school girl named Ellie, and the hands that appeared from the back are the monster that was chasing her. I designed the layout of the hands at the back reaching toward her because the monster will seek the girl wherever she went. I made this background to be dark red and black because the colours bring out the theme of the story which is horror.

Feedback

Week 10
Good Illustration. The title above didn't have to be white, can reuse the colour of the hands. The word had covered the image, so put it at the back.

Week 14
The title word font doesn't seem suitable for "silence", recommended to find and download some fonts from the internet, for example, fonts with scratches.

Reflection

I enjoyed and learned a lot during this project because I liked reading manga and I got to create my own comic. I also need to be familiar with and learn more about the tools in illustrator, as I used the traditional way to colour it by using a brush tool which took a lot of time.

I also think that I need to improve my shading parts on my personal drawings because the image above shows that different shading part gives me different feelings while I looked at them.
