Final Project: Physical Action Animation
For the last project in this module, we were required to use our designed character in Project 1 and animate a 5-second physical action sequence. We needed to choose an action sequence that involved physical movement, for example, fight, chase, or sports-related activity. Our lecturer also provided a YouTube channel where we could study different motions as references for this project.
Storyboard:
Firstly, we needed to create a storyboard for the short animation. It was to visualize the key moments, actions, and emotions of the scene. I had a lot of ideas for this animation, but I was not sure whether I could animate them as expected.
Figure 1.1
My first idea was the character walking in the forest and she saw a flower on the ground. As the character was a fairy, the flower would be the same size as her. She picked up the flower, carried the flower on her shoulder like an umbrella, and lastly was the scene in which she was skipping happily.
I decided to think of another storyboard because I couldn't find any animation references for this and it was going to be hard for me to animate without any reference. Rather than thinking of my own story, I searched and watched different short animations or animated music videos to find some ideas.
The second idea came from a music video by Eve, where a scene of a little girl jumping over the rocks to cross the river, then she accidentally slipped and fell into the water. The scene was started at 2:28.
Figure 1.2
I sketched out the story in a simple way with a background, actions, and the water splash when the character fell into the water.
Figure 1.3
Although the actions were the same as in the music video, I changed some scenes at the beginning, it showed the legs of the character running, then cutting the scene to a wider shot which clearly showed what the character was going to do next. After jumping over the rock, the character slipped and fell into the water. Lastly was a closer shot where the spot where she fell, and she came out to the water's surface.
References:
Before animating the scenes, I searched for a more detailed action related to my storyboard because, from the music video, there were only a few shots for that part and the outcome was not very smooth.
Above all were some videos that helped me to animate my short animation.
Animation Progress:
Scene 4:
I first began with the last scene because it was quite challenging to draw all the water splash and the movement of the character.
Figure 2.1
In the first three frames were the character appears from the water's surface, and I could just draw them quite fast by following the lines of the shape.
Figure 2.2
The next part took me some time to finish. Although I had references but the facial shapes and hair movement took me some time to draw correctly in my own way.
Figure 2.3
After I had the previous facial shape, I could copy and paste it to the next frame with just some adjustment, followed by the hand movement of the character wiping the water on her face.
Figure 2.4
Continuing the movement of her wiping down the water with her hands. There were also some details that I needed to add to the facial expressions.
Figure 2.5
The reference animation stopped at this pose, but I didn't want to end it that quick, so I added an expression of her getting frustrated after the fall. I also added a little annoying effect on the top of her head. For the hand movement, I stopped at the previous frame because it would be another workload by animating her putting her hand down, but the water dripping was still going on.

I first sketched out the legs according to the outline of the reference that I found.

I added one layer to sketch the skirt and shoe.

Lastly, used a cleaner brush to draw the outlines.

The falling animation reference was a fall from a banana split, the movement was quite similar but still needed to adjust the height of the character, as the character fell into the water from a rock. The water splash was following a reference from an animated music video.
After finishing the tie-down of the animation, I continued my progress which was coloring. I first colored my character then the background.

Background Coloring:
Done with the color of my character, I started to draw the background.

Figure 6.9
In the first scene, the character was running in the same spot, so I needed to make the background move.

Above was the background for scene 2.

Then the background of scene 3. I also added some light blue lines on the river and animated them to the left, it made a feel of the river flowing.
