LECTURE
All lectures had been done in task 1: Task 1
INSTRUCTION
Task 3: Type Design and Communication
In this task, we need to design a limited number of western alphabets. The alphabets that we needed to design are "a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , . "
Week 8 & 9:
For sketches, we need to do four or more designs of few random letters. We were also encouraged to use graph paper while drawing our sketches of the font.
Figure 1.1 Inspiration 20/10/2022 (week8)
The images above were inspirations while I did the rough sketches, which were black letters, patterns of traditional Chinese window frame, screengrab of image from Typographic Design Form and Communication, the logo of Tory Burch.
Figure 1.2 Rough Sketch 20/10/2022 (week8)
I simply did a rough sketch based on the inspiration I found.
Figure 1.3 Final Sketch 23/10/2022 (week9)
I did the sketch more accurate with the baseline, median line, cap line, ascender line and descender line. The inspiration of the first font is actually from a logo of a brand, Tory Burch and from it's design I tried to put in some element into the letter fonts. I designed the third fonts like the stroke exceed through out is based on the picture designs. For the inspiration of the forth font is from the question mark of Baskerville typeface, I found it very interesting comparing to the question marks from other typefaces, so I tried using the curve and added a round shape at the finishing tip of the letters. The inspiration of the last font is from black letters I made some changes at the corner by rounded it.
Week 10:
I decided to take the first design to do my digitalization.
Figure 2.1 First attempt with basic shapes 31/10/2022 (week10)
At first, I used shape tool to make out all the letters based on my sketch.
Figure 2.2 Progress of letter "i" 31/10/2022 (week10)
The bracket at the bottom part, I selected the shapes and unite it, then selected the corners that needed to be adjust by using direct selection tool. I set the radius to 25pt, which I think it's ok to see. For the middle part that pointed out, I put a square and unite it with the stem. Using the same method as the bottom part to make it curve a little, I think setting the radius as 15pt is suitable after trying different numbers.
Figure 2.3 Progress of the curve at the upper part 31/10/2022 (week10)
The curve at the upper part, I used shape tool to draw a circle then used scissor tool to cut the circle to four part. I combined two quarters of the circle to form the upper part. For the first attempt, I set the stroke as 70pt, but I found it not very smooth when connected to the stem, so I set it to 80pt and adjusted the position.
Figure 2.4 In Progress 3/11/2022 (week10)
I duplicated the shapes while I made letter "i" and applied in every letters. For letter "a", I was not sure which was better, so I referred to Tuscan font which Mr Vinod mentioned during week 8.
Figure 2.5 First Outcome 3/11/2022 (week10)
I made some changes on letter 'm', so that it looked consistent with the other letters. For the hashtag, I decided to design that has the pointy parts pointed inwards whereas every letters have pointy towards outside, which also looked like a puzzle which can combine together.
Week 11:
Based on the feedbacks given, I did some improvement.
Figure 3.1 Changes of letter "t" 6/11/2022 (week11)
I reduced the height of letter "t", since I noticed my mistake while looking other classmates work and I did check other typeface's letter "t" which its more shorter.
Figure 3.2 Changes size of brackets 6/11/2022 (week11)
The size of brackets of every letters, originally was 252(w)x54(h), and I resized it to 216(w)x36(h), so the letters didn't look too protruding.
Figure 3.3 Changes on the full stop and Comma 6/11/2022 (week11)
The first time I tried to design a comma, I just reused the serif style from the letters and it was not on the baseline. So, I redo the comma by changing the tail with 40pt stroke of quarter circle. I also increased the size of it.
Figure 3.4 Second Outcome 10/11/2022 (week11)
Mr Vinod suggested to take the shape of upper part to the bottom part. I referred to Tuscan font and made some changes, but except for letters 'a', 'e', 'g', 'y'. As I found it very weird by adding the curve at the tip, so I remained the design of these four letters.
Figure 3.5 Final Outcome 11/11/2022 (week11)
I had increased the height of hashtag and I tried to put on the pointy part but it's not suitable so I didn't put any design. I also increased the size of full stop and comma.
Week 12:
Figure 4.1 Measurement 16/11/2022 (week12)
Before moving the letters to Fontlab, I measured the letters which needed to type in Fontlab.
Figure 4.2 Combined shapes 16/11/2022 (week12)
I also required to combine all the shapes of the letters, but when I combined it, the letters changed into different shapes as the curves at the lower and upper part are lines. So, I use pen tool to trace out the shape.
Figure 4.3 Screengrab in Fontlab 16/11/2022 (week12)
After copying all letters to Fontlab, I opened Metrics Tab to type out and did the kerning.
Figure 4.4 Poster 16/11/2022 (week12)
I downloaded the font in illustrator and made a poster. The sentence that needed to type in the poster was " make type great again!". The font size must be the same and the information must be Helvetica in 12pt.

FEEDBACKS
Week 9
Specific Feedback
The serif is slightly higher, nothing wrong with that but make sure that it's consistent, because the "O" is not consistent.
Week 10
Specific Feedback
The serif at the bottom part is too much, it is already protruding and its protruding upwards also. As its already a very elaborate typeface so can take the shape that had done on top to the bottom, the curvature at the top is deep so maybe make it less curved. The hashtag is allowed because there are good reasoning underpinning. The comma and full stop need to be work.
General Feedback
Consistency is important. Do not use existing typeface and make changes.
Week 11
Specific Feedback
Comma and full stop need to be bigger, the hashtag height is not accurate.
REFLECTION
Experience
I quite enjoyed the process of doing this task because it was fun to design my own font with different styles. When I could download my font and could type it in illustrator, I felt satisfied.
Observation
I observe that making a font in illustrator takes more time. I also need to put more effort while doing the letters because its hard to control the positions and size according to the sketches I did.
Findings
I found that designing or creating a font need lots of studies, researches, skills and also patient to make a good font.

A well-known model of the design process consists of five steps. This typographic diagram reveals the design process a s a flexible, dynamic and unpredictable mental journey.
Immersion into the design process begins by defining the problem and its parameters. The second phase is gathering the essential information needed by the designer regarding all aspects of the problem. The next design process is ideating, the mind should be open to lateral, sideways and unconventional thinking. Synthesizing, concentrates on narrowing options and coming to closure. Lastly is realizing, implementation cannot go forward without client approval.
